How To Choose The Right Mount For Your TV Wall Mount Installation

This guide covers six types of TV mounts—Fixed, Tilting, Full Motion, Pull-Down, Ceiling, and Pillar—each suited for different needs and spaces. For safety and proper setup, it's best to hire a professional like the Auxe team.

When mounting a TV, choosing the right type of tv mount makes a big difference in how comfortable, safe, and enjoyable your viewing experience will be. There are different types of TV mounts, each designed for a specific purpose. Before picking one, it's important to understand how each mount works and what it’s best suited for.

Here are the main types of TV mounts:

  • Fixed Mount
  • Tilting Mount
  • Full Motion Mount
  • Pull-Down Mount
  • Ceiling Mount
  • Pillar Mount

Each type offers different benefits, so let’s look at them in more detail to help you make the best choice.

Fixed TV Mount

A fixed TV mount is the most basic and commonly used wall mount. It holds the TV flat and tight against the wall like a picture frame. Once the TV is mounted, it does not tilt, turn, or move. This type of mount gives the cleanest and lowest profile.

When to Choose This Mount

Choose this mount when your TV will be installed at the right viewing height—usually eye level—and you don’t need to move it after installation.

Reasons to Choose:

  • Keeps the TV close to the wall (great for a sleek look).

  • Easiest type to install.

  • Usually the most affordable option.

  • Fewer moving parts means fewer chances of mechanical problems.

Reasons to Avoid:

  • No angle adjustments—what you mount is what you get.

  • Can be hard to reach ports and cables behind the TV.

  • Not suitable if you have windows or lights that cause screen glare.

Beneficial For:

  • Bedrooms or small living rooms where the seating is directly in front of the TV.

  • People who want a simple, clean design with no need for movement.

Tilting TV Mount

A tilting mount is similar to a fixed mount but with one key feature—it allows the TV to tilt up or down. This helps reduce glare from lights or windows and makes the screen easier to view when the TV is mounted higher than eye level.

When to Choose This Mount

Choose a tilting mount if you need to place your TV a bit higher on the wall, such as above a low cabinet, shelf, or even a fireplace, and want to angle it slightly downward.

Reasons to Choose:

  • Can reduce glare from windows or ceiling lights.

  • Improves screen visibility when mounted higher up.

  • Offers some movement without the complexity of a full motion mount.

Reasons to Avoid:

  • Does not swivel left or right.

  • Takes up slightly more space than a fixed mount.

  • Limited adjustment range compared to full motion mounts.

Beneficial For:

  • Living rooms, bedrooms, or offices where the TV must be placed higher than normal.

  • Families who want a simple solution to reduce screen glare.

Full Motion TV Mount

Source: Auxe

A full motion mount, also known as an articulating mount, gives the most movement options. You can tilt the TV up or down, swivel it side to side, and extend it away from the wall. This mount offers complete flexibility in viewing angle.

When to Choose This Mount

Choose a full motion mount if you often watch TV from different parts of the room or if your furniture setup means you need to adjust the screen often.

Reasons to Choose:

  • Maximum flexibility in angle and position.

  • Allows easy access to ports, plugs, and cables behind the TV.

  • Perfect for corner mounting or large open areas.

Reasons to Avoid:

  • Installation is more complex and may need two people.

  • Usually more expensive than fixed or tilting mounts.

  • TV sticks out further from the wall, which may not suit minimal designs.

Beneficial For:

  • Large rooms with different seating areas (like an open-concept living space).

  • Families who want to pull the TV out or turn it depending on where they're watching from.

Pull-Down TV Mount

Source: Auxe

A pull-down mount is a special type of full motion mount. It allows you to pull the TV down to eye level, watch it comfortably, and then push it back up when you're done. This is especially useful when mounting the TV over a fireplace.

When to Choose This Mount

Choose a pull-down mount if your TV must be installed above a fireplace or a very high wall, but you still want to watch it at a lower, more natural angle.

Reasons to Choose:

  • Lets you move the screen down to eye level.

  • Easier on your neck if the TV is mounted high.

  • Some include gas springs for smooth and easy motion.

Reasons to Avoid:

  • More expensive than other mount types.

  • Requires strong wall support and more installation space.

  • It may be tricky for beginners to install.

Beneficial For:

  • Homes with fireplaces or tall walls.

  • Viewers who want a more comfortable angle without permanent low mounting.

Ceiling TV Mount

Source: Auxe

A ceiling TV mount hangs your television from the ceiling using a long bracket or pole. This is ideal when wall space is not available or when you want to save space below.

When to Choose This Mount

Choose a ceiling mount when wall mounting is not possible or when you need to install a TV in the middle of a large room.

Reasons to Choose:

  • Saves wall and floor space.

  • Ideal for rooms with high ceilings or open layouts.

  • Can rotate and tilt for flexible viewing.

  • Works well in places without a nearby wall.

Reasons to Avoid:

  • Harder to install—needs strong ceiling support.

  • More effort to route power and HDMI cables cleanly.

  • Not ideal for rooms with low ceilings.

Beneficial For:

  • Commercial areas, gyms, kitchens, or basements.

  • Large open rooms where a wall is too far away.

Pillar TV Mount

Source: Auxe

A pillar TV mount attaches directly to a column, post, or structural beam. These are helpful in open floor plans, lofts, or commercial areas where a traditional wall doesn’t exist.

When to Choose This Mount

Choose a pillar mount when your room has exposed beams or round posts and you want the TV mounted neatly on them.

Reasons to Choose:

  • Makes use of otherwise wasted vertical space.

  • Great for rooms with no available wall surface.

  • Keeps floor area free for furniture or decor.

Reasons to Avoid:

  • Requires a properly sized and strong pillar.

  • Installation may be tricky due to round or uneven surfaces.

  • Limited motion or angle flexibility depending on the post shape.

Beneficial For:

  • Lofts, condos, industrial-style homes, and retail spaces.

  • Unique layouts where walls aren't suitable for mounting.

Should You Hire a Professional?

While some homeowners choose to install TV mounts on their own, it’s highly recommended to hire a professional like Auxe for better and safer tv installations, especially for complex or heavy-duty mounts. Here's why:

Benefits of Hiring a Pro:

  • Ensures the TV is mounted securely and level.

  • Avoids damage to drywall, electrical wires, or wall studs.

  • Professionals can identify the best height and placement for comfort and safety.

  • Saves time and reduces the risk of personal injury or dropped TVs.

Mounting a TV improperly can lead to serious consequences like a falling screen, broken electronics, or wall repair costs. Investing in expert help may prevent these risks and give you peace of mind.

Final Tips for Choosing the Right Mount

Here are a few key things to keep in mind before buying a TV mount:

  • TV Size & Weight: Always check that your mount supports your TV’s size and weight.

  • VESA Compatibility: Your TV and mount should match in terms of screw hole spacing (called the VESA pattern).

  • Wall Type: Make sure your wall can handle the mount and TV. Drywall alone is not strong enough—wall studs or concrete are required.

  • Viewing Angle: Think about where you’ll sit and how often you might need to adjust the screen.

  • Cable Management: If you often switch HDMI or USB cables, a full motion mount might make life easier.

Conclusion

Choosing the right TV mount is about more than just looks. It’s about safety, comfort, and functionality. A fixed mount is great for a simple setup, while a tilting mount helps with glare. A full motion mount gives you the most control, and a pull-down mount is perfect for fireplace installations. Ceiling and pillar mounts are special solutions for rooms without walls or with unique structures.

For best results, consider calling a professional installer like Auxe to make sure your TV is mounted safely and correctly. The right mount—installed the right way—can make your home theater experience better, safer, and longer-lasting.

I called Auxe to mount my 65" TV on long weekend. They sent me the quote right away and booked a service for the next day. The price was very reasonable compared to other companies. The technician, arrived on time, installed our TV with great quality in a short time. Measurements and installation were very accurate and exactly as I requested. The HDMI cables I had purchased to conceal in the wall were not long enough. The technician came back again to fish the new cables at no additional cost and finished the job. I am very satisfied with the service and will recommend others to use it. show less
